9 Of The Most Stylish Divider Room Ideas

In need of divider room ideas? In this post I share different designers approaches to static and flexible room dividers.

So regardless of whether you have an open plan layout but want an element of privacy or to create a flexible enclosed space for more hygge vibes, or to utilise room height for storage this edit of divider room ideas will help.

#1 Cabinet Divider Room Ideas

Steel Craft House, designed by Dutch studio Zecc Architecten, is a building that was previously used for storage and has been expanded into a home for a steel artist.

The project was designed by Zecc Architecten and then the owner built the 95-square-metre house themselves over a span of 10 years.

The house has been designed to allow as much natural light in as possible with a window at the front, large tri-fold glass doors at the back and a skylight above the staircase. On the second floor the glass continues to let in more light with another set of tri-fold glass doors leading onto a balcony.

Due to the house’s compact size the owner wanted the objects in the house to serve several functions including the stairs area.

A divider between the stairs and living room is created through an oak shelving structure that provides storage and allows for the bottom steps to double as additional seating.

The shelves provide ample cupboards for possessions whilst also creating a beautiful sculptural feature within the room.

#2 Flooring Divider Room Ideas

Network of Architecture (NOA) have used different flooring, materials, and custom geometric furniture to divide rooms whilst optimising the space and functions in this 17th century Parisian apartment.

Rather than putting in place corridors to divide spaces that would have taken up valuable space, the designers have used different floor finishes, such as the French herringbone and terrazzo, to divide this room into two ‘islands’.

The subtle flooring distinction in the space zones each area whilst still allowing the room to be connected. The curve between the flowing is also reflected in the lighting fixture above that follows the curve of the flooring and helps to define each zone further.

The larger of the two ‘islands’ in the room features the dining area and kitchen whilst the other ‘island’ features built-in seating and shelving to create a nook in the space.

The designer Rungger explains that the ambition for the apartment was to create the feeling of comfort within the large space and that “each island is a space within a space, intimate in itself but in dialogue with the rest.”

#3 Open Shelves Divider Room Ideas

Studio Ruetemple have transformed this 35-square-metre garage into an architect’s workshop.

A plywood partition has been used to separate the space into two areas for working and relaxing.

Considering how much interiors can directly impact mood and aid creativity the designers wanted to make the room divider support the room being as spacious and as light as possible.

The open shelving helps the space to not feel enclosed and more expansive and serves the functional need for storage areas that the owner can use to store their supplies.

#4 Floor Levels Divider Room Ideas

The design firm Echlin have used a broken-plan layout within this Knightsbridge Mews house.

The ambition was to create a home with copious amounts of flexible space and natural light, as well as creating a strong connection with the surrounding nature.

To make this possible Echlin have completely opened the floorplan to allow for views the full width of the house. Different floor levels have been used to create a sunken seating area by the kitchen and divide the experience in the room, as well as sliding pocket doors to allow for views into different spaces.

Like the previous room divider idea, open shelving has been installed to divide the dining, study and living room on the first floor.

Also, the natural materials, organic textures and muted colour palette have been used to create a sense of calm and tranquillity in the home, whilst the heritage colours used are a nod to the home’s history and create visual separation between the two spaces.

#5 Glass Divider Room Ideas

With cities becoming increasingly dense with apartments, new ways to maximise small spaces is required to create homely and functional spaces that aid wellbeing.

Studio IR Arquitectura showcase their approach to making this possible through this 1950s small apartment in Buenos Aires.

Glass enclosures have been used to enable the space to become more compact in colder months but still allow light through, and also be opened up in the hotter months to allow the space to become more open and allow greater air flow.

Shelving allows for the full height of the space to be utilised, creating a small library and behind this a stepped platform has been built to create a desk and bench at the bottom and a bed at the top.

#6 Wardrobe Divider Room Ideas

Rather than building walls and permanently dividing a space, design firm Studiomama have thought of this innovative wardrobe that can also function as a room divider when required.

The vibrant pink wardrobe features a hanging rail and ten drawers for storage, and then the front doors can unfold into a screen to divide the room.

The brilliantly flexible design can be transported flat-packed and is made from a maple wood frame with cedar wood crossed on the front to support each panel. The designers claim that the scent from the cedar wood also helps to repel moths.

#7 Material Divider Room Ideas

Commonly wood is used as the material of choice to create room dividers, but Philippe Malouin has showcased an assortment of different materials and fabrics that can be used to insert form and function into a room.

The screen prototypes, created for the Swedish furniture brand Hem, have been made using pale pink foam, vibrant blue mesh and dyed green leather.

Other screens have used perforated metal, green plastic, ruched black fabric, and a leather beanbag wall was showcased to emphasises a dividers function for sound dampening.

#8 Slatted Divider Room Ideas

In this Mexico City home by Francesc Rifé Studio, design firm Simon Hamui have created a slatted screen divider to be used in the dining room to separate the space from the main hallway and living room.

Made from aged brass, smoked glass, and wood the slats provide privacy whilst allowing light through. The house design has taken a minimalist approach whilst also injecting furnishings that reflect the owner’s lifestyle and tastes.

#9 Colourful Divider Room Ideas

In this apartment by Lucas y Hernández Gil, called Casa P82, sliding partitions along with bright surfaces keep this home feeling open and bright.

Previously built with static multiple rooms the apartment has been completely overhauled to feature flexible rooms made possible by using full-height partitions so that the owner can host multiple friends and family members.

Each of the partitions slide to provide privacy between each room such as the below between the living room and master bedroom. The timber headboard can cleverly also be used as a desk, creating an area for the owner to work.
